Pee Wee Golf

Sunday October 7th

For more information call: Julianne 794-9452 or Nancy 795-8670

ONLY IN NILES! Unique and spread throughout the Niles neighborhood and Niles School, miniature golfers will be able to putt their way through one-of-a-kind pee-wee golf style holes, with many different themes! The Tournament ends at the Watering Hole for reshresments and prizes.

Prizes are awarded for best-dressed duffer aka golfer (wackier the better), best hole, and overall score. Each hole supplies putters; however, golfers are free to bring an old favorite, if it can take some abuse.

In previous years, at the Port Hole, a pirate had players "putting the plank." After the ball had dropped off the plank, the players had to putt their golf balls into port, past water hazards, sharks and sand.

The Rabbit Hole featured Alice and the Mad Hatter hosting larger-than-life tea party while players putted a four-foot round "golf" ball from a teacup onto the green.

The Nat King Cole Hole, challenged lucky golfers who could drive the ball into a waste can suspended in the air. If you got that far you could hear their ball traverse a suspended irrigation pipe and then watch it drop at the foot of the bigger-than life musician!

Other memorable past holes include: The Aristothole (your philosophy of putting please), The Flag Pole Hole, and the holiday themed, Ho Ho Ho Hole.

Proceeds benefit hosting organization, Niles Main Street, a non-profit association dedicated to the revitalization and historic preservation of the historic Niles District of Fremont, California.

Star-gazing: View Stars, Planets and Galaxies Friday Evenings

Foothill Observatory is open for public viewing every clear Friday evening from 9:00 p.m. until 11:00 p.m. Visitors can view the wonders of the universe through the observatory's new computer-controlled 16-inch Schmidt-Cassegrain telescope. Views of objects in our solar system may include craters and mountains on the moon, the moons and cloud-bands of Jupiter, the rings of Saturn, etc. The choice of targets for any evening's viewing depends on the season and what objects are currently in the sky.

The public viewing programs at Foothill are free of charge and are open to guests of all ages. Please note that the observatory is closed when the weather is cloudy. Also note that visitor parking permits are available from the machines in the parking lots for $2.00.

The Great Dickens Christmas Fair

Celebrate the Holiday Season in Victorian London!

The bustling streets of London, immortalized for all time by the mighty pen of Charles Dickens, form the living backdrop of your excursion into Christmas Past. You are a living part of a Victorian Christmas card come to life!

A Bay Area tradition for 28 holiday seasons, the Great Dickens Christmas Fair returns to the San Francisco Cow Palace Exhibition Halls for five weekends , including the Friday after Thanksgiving in 2007, from Friday, November 23 through Saturday, December 23, from 11am 'til 7pm.

Created in 1970 by Ron & Phyllis Patterson, the fair is now produced by Kevin & Leslie Patterson & Red Barn Productions, who continue the family tradition of theatrical excellence through authenticity, participation, and playfulness.

Come wander the lanes of Victorian London, as the glow of twilight settles upon the city. With the scent of pine boughs and freshly baked scones floating in the air and the sound of carolers and holiday merrymakers accompanying your stroll…

Visit shops bedecked with Christmastime finery and filled with unique treasures.
Stop in for a hot toddy or a pint of Boddington's at Mad Sal's Dockside Ale House, where the low-life hang out and the high-born drop in.
Raise a champagne toast to the holidays at Fezziwig's Warehouse, the most cheerful spot in London.

Enjoy rollicking entertainments on four stages and in the streets.
Feast on fine foods from the British Empire and beyond.
Rest a spell in Cuthbert's Tea House, for a sip of hot tea and cucumber sandwiches or scones.

Experience the joys of Christmas past at the Great Dickens Christmas Fair!

Enticing aromas of roasted chestnuts and hearty foods fill the air.
Cries of street vendors hawking their wares ring out above the bustling crowd. Dozens of lamplit shops are filled to overflowing with Christmas presents. New this year: each patron receives a Victorian name, a Passport to the Past, and tokens for prizes if the Timegame is well played. And it’s all in a Holiday Humor!

A series of get-togethers where each person in the group presents a short autobiography. One person would be featured at each meeting. The person would tell us all about his or her life, show photographs, yearbooks or whatever else the person wanted to show. Great way to get to know each other better.

We could have an evening on bizarre games played around the world. Each person could research an unusual game played in another culture. We could go around the room and each person would discuss his or her game.

Careers Night - Nuts and Bolts. Each person could discuss in-depth exactly what that person does on any given day in his or her job. It is sometimes fascinating to find out exactly what people do each day.

The "Perfect Life" evening. Each person could describe in 10 minutes the characteristics of the perfect life for that person. Interesting!

A "If I won the Lottery" evening. Each person could describe what he or she would do upon winning 500 million dollars after taxes.

A "Perfect Charity" evening. Each person could describe what he or she believed would be the perfect charity to set up and why.

An evening of painting. We could each bring some paper or canvas some brushes and some kind of paints and we could create some paintings together.

A "learn how to write" evening. We could invite a professional writer to meet with us and give us the ABC's of how to write a short story. We could then all try to write a short story and a few weeks later get together and review our short stories.

A "Three Best Things That Ever Happened To Me" evening. Each person would talk about the three best things that ever happened to that person.

An evening where each person would describe the things that were the most fun for that person when in grade school, middle school, high school, in college and after.

An evening where each person in advance would pick out a short piece of music listen to it and then in our group try to describe what feelings, colors, textures, smells and sights the music evokes.

An evening in which each person describes the three pieces of music the person likes the most and why.

Each member of the group could pick out a project the person would like to complete at their house or apartment. All members of the group could participate in completing that project at each person's house. Theoretically, if all the projects take about the same amount of time, then we will all spend about the same amount of time completing everyones’ projects as we each would have spent completing our own. However, with this plan we all get to enjoy the companionship and expertise of all the members. This plan would also insure that all the projects actually get done.

Create a list as a group of things we have learned by dating, getting married, having kids or not having kids, divorcing and trying to figure out where to go from there. We could each keep a copy for future reference in our lives ahead.

Anyone Want to try Saturday Dinner at the Belmont Greek Festival?

Belmont Greek Festival Set for Labor Day Weekend,
Sept. 1-3

With cries of “Opa” and “Yassou” in the air, the 37th Annual Belmont Greek Festival rolls into the Peninsula with food and fun for the entire family on Labor Day Weekend, Sat., Sept. 1, through Mon., Sept. 3, at the Greek Orthodox Church of the Holy Cross, 900 Alameda de las Pulgas, in Belmont.
The three-day Belmont Greek Festival will feature homemade Greek meals and desserts, live Greek music, dancers who lift tables with their teeth, a Greek mythology play, children’s games and crafts, folk music concerts, cooking demonstrations, shopping boutiques, a flea market, church tours and more.

More than 15,000 people are expected to visit the Festival, according to Co-chairman Bob Nemchik, who says it is a cultural celebration that everyone in the family can enjoy.

“We strive to present different kinds of entertainment,” Nemchik said, “So that whether you’re a young pethi (child) or a yia-yia (grandmother) or anywhere in between, you’ll have a great time.”

It all starts with the food. Dozens of church volunteers work for months preparing and cooking the authentic Greek dishes, Nemchik said.

The Festival menu includes barbecued lamb chops (with Greek seasonings), moussaka (layers of eggplant and ground beef topped with a cream sauce) and dolmades (grape leaves wrapped around ground beef and rice). Those who prefer a meatless diet will enjoy fried kalamari (squid), spanakopita (spinach and cheese stuffed inside layers of filo pastry), fasolatha (bean soup) and Greek salad.

For dessert, guests can feast on homemade pastries such as loukoumades (doughnut holes covered with honey), baklava (layers of nuts and filo soaked in honey) and galactobouriko (filo pastry filled with custard and covered with syrup).

After eating, the kids will be entertained in the Fun Zone with carnival games, arts and crafts, inflatable bounce structures, and concerts by award-winning children’s entertainer Andy Z.

Young and old alike will enjoy the Greek mythology play in the outdoor amphitheater. The amphitheater is also home to concerts by the “Festival Folk Singers and Ensemble” and the “Aurora Mandolin Orchestra.” In another outdoor venue, guests will be able to dance to a live band and watch performances by youth dance groups and the popular table dancers called “Sons of Ulysses.”

“The ‘Sons of Ulysses’ are two young men, Peter and George Stamos, who dance as they lift stacks of tables and chairs with nothing but their teeth,” Nemchik said. “They always get the crowd cheering.”

Tours of the award-winning Byzantine-style church, with its extensive mosaic iconography, will be given throughout the weekend. The Holy Cross Church Liturgical Choir will sing Orthodox hymns during the first church tour on Sunday.

The Church of the Holy Cross supports many charitable groups throughout San Mateo County, and each year, the church donates a portion of the Festival proceeds to several local charities. Previous recipients of Festival donations have included Samaritan House, Interfaith Network for Community Help (INCH), Children’s Advocacy Council, local schools and churches, and the Belmont mayor’s choice of charity. In addition, Holy Cross Church sponsors several children from the Children’s Receiving Home of San Mateo County as special guests of the Festival.

The hours of the Belmont Greek Festival are Saturday, September 1, and Sunday, September 2, from Noon to 10 PM, and Monday, September 3, from Noon to 8 PM. The Fun Zone for children closes at 7 PM all three days.

Admission is $5 for adults and $2.50 for seniors and youth ages 13-17. Children 12 and under are admitted free, accompanied by a parent or guardian.

For more information, explore this website or call the church office, (650) 591-4447.

We’ll see you there! Yassou!

A series of get-togethers where each person in the group presents a short autobiography. One person would be featured at each meeting. The person would tell us all about his or her life, show photographs, yearbooks or whatever else the person wanted to show. Great way to get to know each other better.--

We could have an evening on bizarre games played around the world. Each person could research an unusual game played in another culture. We could go around the room and each person would discuss his or her game.--

Careers Night - Nuts and Bolts. Each person could discuss in-depth exactly what that person does on any given day in his or her job. It is sometimes fascinating to find out exactly what people do each day.--

The "Perfect Life" evening. Each person could describe in 10 minutes the characteristics of the perfect life for that person. Interesting!--

A "If I won the Lottery" evening. Each person could describe what he or she would do upon winning 500 million dollars after taxes.--

A "Perfect Charity" evening. Each person could describe what he or she believed would be the perfect charity to set up and why.--

An evening of painting. We could each bring some paper or canvas some brushes and some kind of paints and we could create some paintings together. --

A "learn how to write" evening. We could invite a professional writer to meet with us and give us the ABC's of how to write a short story. We could then all try to write a short story and a few weeks later get together and review our short stories.--

A "Three Best Things That Ever Happened To Me" evening. Each person would talk about the three best things that ever happened to that person.--

An evening where each person would describe the things that were the most fun for that person when in grade school, middle school, high school, in college and after.--

An evening where each person in advance would pick out a short piece of music listen to it and then in our group try to describe what feelings, colors, textures, smells and sights the music evokes.--

An evening in which each person describes the three pieces of music the person likes the most and why.--

Other Activities
Each member of the group could pick out a project the person would like to complete at their house or apartment. All members of the group could participate in completing that project at each person's house. Theoretically, if all the projects take about the same amount of time, then we will all spend about the same amount of time completing everyones’ projects as we each would have spent completing our own. However, with this plan we all get to enjoy the companionship and expertise of all the members. This plan would also insure that all the projects actually get done.--

Create a list as a group of things we have learned by dating, getting married, having kids or not having kids, divorcing and trying to figure out where to go from there. We could each keep a copy for future reference in our lives ahead.--

As a group we could practice techniques of acting found in a book from the library and then we could all audition for part in a local theatrical production.--
